필리핀에는 7100 개의 섬이 있는데 사마르는 그 중 세번째로 큰 섬으로 약 170만 명의 와라이 와라이 종족이 살고 있습니다. 대부분 토속신이나 우상을 함께 섬기는 명목 뿐인 카톨릭 신자들 입니다. 와라이 말로 ‘와라이’는 ‘아무 것도 없다’는 뜻인데 그래서 종족이름은 ‘절대적으로 아무 것도 아닌’ 사람들로 번역됩니다. 1980년초 GP선교회에서 가장 복음화가 안된 지역을 조사한 결과 사마르는 가장 가난하고 거듭난 그리스도인이 가장 적은 지역이었고 당시에도 미전도 종족으로 분류되고 있었습니다. 와라이와라이는 필리핀에서 ‘거친’ 종족으로 알려져 있는데 젊은이들은 대부분 일자리를 찾아 집을 떠나 마닐라에서 살며 여자들의 경우 매춘이나 가정부 등의 일을 하고 남자들은 대부분 갱에 연루되는 경우가 많은데 와라이갱은 마닐라에서 악명이 높습니다.

"There are 7100 islands in the Philippines. Samar is the third largest and home of 1.7 million Waray-Waray people.  Most of them are nominal Catholics with deeply rooted animism and idolatry.  In their language the word Waray means “nothing” and “Waray-waray” can be translated as “absolutely nothing” people. In the late 1980’s Global Partners had researched the nation to determine the least evangelized place. The result put Samar as the poorest and with the least number of true believers in Christ.  At that time, the Waray Waray was still on the list of the “unreached” people group of the Philippines. Waray Waray is known as “matapang” (rough) among the Filipinos.  Many young Waray Waray leave home to look for jobs in Manila, but end up in undesirable and shady job opportunities like prostitution and domestic helpers for girls.  As for boys, many get involved with gangs. Unfortunately, Waray-Waray gang groups are notorious in Manila."
